Slow Festival History - 2010
The concept of the Slow Festival came about when 2 friends, Jean Wright and Di Young- both passionate about Sedgefield- invited Amanda and Mark Dixon and a few key ward councillors and marketing people from Sedgefield to brainstorm the idea of an event that would put Sedgefield on the map and showcase the natural beauty of the town we live in. Jean, Di, Mark and Amanda went on to decide that rather than just 'one event', why not have a 'festival of events'. Asked to chair and organise the process, Amanda, who had just been retrenched, knew it was time to put her energies into starting an events business of her own. Slow Festival was born and it was decided that Easter would be the best time for it- with there being a captured market of people all looking for things to do. Although time was short, the small group of organizers involved individuals or groups that wanted to work together to produce a Festival that may be small in its first year but that in time would grow to deliver benefit to as many sections of the Sedgefield community as possible. With Knysna Tourism allocating R15k as a marketing budget for year 1, we were able to build a simple, yet effective website and have the logo designed as well as some super posters and correx boards designed and made. Slow Festival 2010 went off without a glitch with a small handful of 5 core events; Boulle, Backgammon and Band Event, Easter Bunny Beach Fling and Sand Sculpting Challenge, Dog Walk and Talk and the Pedal, Paddle and Pant. The main charity supported was KAWS Smutsville spayathon.
